About Us

The Deer Cook was started by Gary Modisett over 12 years ago.

Gary loved venison and wanted others to be able to enjoy it as well. After years of serving venison that tasted good to friends and family, it was time to provide these tastes to everyone.

  As Gary stated.
…..”To us deer are considered a food source as well as being a magnificent animal that deserves our respect for their ability to survive in today’s modern environments….”

Consuming deer is a healthy way to utilize red meat without wondering about “where it came from” and how it was treated before it got to you. Cooking venison is heart healthy and provides almost unlimited variety in its recipes that the whole family can enjoy”

Gary started mixing his seasonings at home; he attended many of the deer shows in the area and sampled his Chili Seasoning and other fine spices and rubs. Gary loved traveling and meeting people on the road and talking to them about hunting and cooking.

As Gary has stated …….” Hundreds of people have seen me at deer shows and can testify to how good the products are--it ain't bragging' no more it’s just plain good!

Gary’s goal was to become your trusted supplier of quality products used to enhance the venison experience. The products sold by the Deer Cook are used to enhance the flavor of venison and make it more enjoyable to more people. The Deer Cook considers deer to be a food source rather than a wall trophy….

Soon, the spice orders came too fast for Gary to be able to keep up with the mixing at home, so he moved to having his special formula bottled for him. This allowed him to have more time to hunt, meet people and travel the shows!!

In November of 2008 Gary, (while at a Deer show doing what he loved) was called “home”. It was a very sad time, and put the company on hold…and almost closed.

Then one of Gary’s “deer” friends Brent Price, who also traveled the Deer Show circuit with him, decided that he wanted to preserve what Gary had started. You see, Gary used to tease Brent at shows and would often “highjack” Brent’s booth. He would tease Brent about his “line” and help out Brent when he needed it. Brent decided he couldn’t just let all the hard work and love that Gary put in to Deer Cook go away so he purchased the product line, and is continuing Gary’s vision.

You still won’t find a specific building for the Deer Cook today, Brent who lives in Kentucky, still runs the line, fills orders and attends the shows. In 2009 Brent decided to bring on some helpers who help him at shows and help by answering the phones and filling orders. Brent’s vision is to continue to preserve and expand what Gary had started.

On the employee roster today you will see Brent Price as owner, visionary and overall “herd manager”. Kathy answers the phones runs the website and takes care of shipping. She also runs the shows around the Nashville area including a new show added this year, the Nashville Flea Market which Gary used to attend in his earlier days. .

Rest assured the Deer Cook isn’t going away… we are building our 2010 show roster right now, so check back often to see if we are going to be in your neck of the woods in 2010!

We still enjoy watching the deer throughout the year and then utilizing them as a food source other times of the year. Animals are a gift to us all; some are for observing, some are for consuming, we appreciate both and hope you do too.

We will continue to share ideas with you just as Gary did, and hope you will stay in touch with the web site so you can see new items and reminisce with us about this year’s deer camps and swap lies about our deer hunting ability!!

Of course those big bucks are great to find and hang on the wall, but when it comes to enjoyable table fare for the family, a quality doe is hard to beat!!

The Deer Cook encourages you to collect a doe for the freezer. Then use our seasonings to help you prepare quality meals that everyone can enjoy.

Happy Hunting – from the Deer Cook team
